I have been using computers as a hobby since 1972, to earn a living since 1980 and have been teaching computing for the last twelve years. I have worked mainly in the areas of Programming and Graphics

The Present

For the last 12 years I have been employed by Maroochydore TAFE, teaching and tutoring, mainly in the areas of office applications and programming but for the last two or three years I have also been teaching some multimedia classes at the TAFE.

One of these is about creating web pages. That is how this web site came about. It was originally just a vehicle to demonstrate good and bad design principles and how download speed and usability can be affected by making the wrong choices. It still contains good and bad design principles, though of course the bad ones are done deliberately to illustrate a point, well that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

The early Years - The Beatles Influence

Actually, I think that my interest in music started before the Beatles hit the music scene, however, I am sure that they had a major influence on many of us teenagers. John Lennon was my idol and I was close to tears when I heard the news that he had been shot.

I played in quite a few groups and had a few of my own during the sixties and seventies. Why do I mention this? I'll explain. Having an amplifier blaring away behind me for years has affected my hearing (so the experts were right, they said it would happen, we laughed at them, Rock & Roll was supposed to be loud)

The only fortunate thing, was that I always stood on the left of the stage, so it was mainly my right ear that was affected. I mention this for my students at TAFE. If you are talking to me try and stand on my left. If you ask me something and I don't answer, I am not ignoring you, I probably didn't hear you.

If you are the slightest interested in those early years then have a look at the CLEE-SHAY web site. Chris( Tatty ) of CLEE SHAY used to be my drummer, and brother in law - well he is still my brother in law.

Chris has managed to dig up some photos from those early years and they are on the site at Alan Kent Trio/Set gallery page. Boy it's scary looking at old photos like that, where did the years go?

As a way of explanation, I was the Alan Kent in the Alan Kent bands, you can read about the bands at The Alan Kent Set page

They say that if you can remember the sixties then you weren't there. Actually it wasn't quite that bad, I have some great memories from that era, although I must admit that I know a few people who were heavily into drugs and drink, who have trouble remembering their own name, never mind the sixties.

More to come
